NYU Food Impact Program

Colin Jerolmack is Professor of Environmental Studies and Sociology. His interests include human-animal relations, resource dilemmas, community, qualitative research methods, and health. His first book, The Global Pigeon (University of Chicago Press, 2013), was a comparative ethnography of how human-animal relations shape urban life. His second book, Up to Heaven and Down to Hell: Fracking, Freedom, and Community in an American Town (Princeton University Press, 2021) is an ethnographic study of how shale gas extraction (fracking) transforms rural community life. He’s also researched and written about zoonotic disease transmission and is currently researching how social scientists and animal ethologists compare patterns of communication and interaction across species.

In addition to serving as Head of Programming for CEAP, Sofia also serves as Head of Partnerships at the NYU Center for Mind, Ethics, and Policy, and Coordinator at the NYU Wild Animal Welfare Program. Outside of her work at NYU, Sofia is Fellowship Director at the Reducetarian Foundation. Previously, she served as Managing Director at Animal Charity Evaluators. She holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Animal Studies from NYU.

Caya van der Sluis is a researcher at NYU’s Center for Environmental and Animal Protection and NYU’s Department of Environmental Studies. Her research examines the impacts of food systems on non-human animals, humans, and the environment, and how these are interconnected, with a particular focus on industrial animal agriculture and aquaculture. She holds an MA in Animal Studies and an MSc in Agroecology.

Haeun Ro is the Administrative Aide for CMEP and its partner programs. She previously served on the administrative team at NYU Stern’s Department of Management and Organizations and has experience in roles across K – 12 and university education, including Writing Partner and Senior Tutor at the NYU Writing Center. An NYU alum, Haeun holds a BS in Applied Psychology and a BA in English and American Literature with minors in Creative Writing and Studio Art.

Devin Nieusma is a researcher and project manager for NYU’s Center for Environmental and Animal Protection (CEAP). She conducts and facilitates research with CEAP, the Wild Animal Welfare Program, and the Food Impact Program, while also advancing public scholarship. Her research examines human-animal relationships and issues of multispecies justice, with a focus on industrial animal agriculture and wildlife conservation. She has a background in program management and development for environmental non-profits.

Audrey Becker serves as the Administrator for CEAP and its partner programs, handling daily operations, event planning, and communications. She previously worked with NYU’s Executive MBA Program as a Program Coordinator, handling student onboarding, faculty affairs, and office management. Prior to her time as an administrator she worked in roles relating to environmental research and education, including as a Science & Policy Extern for the Office of the New York State Attorney General, Environmental Protection Bureau and as an Education Intern for the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission.
